H\u01a1n ba th\u1eadp k\u1ef7 tr\u01b0\u1edbc, t\u1ea1i m\u1ed9t ng\u00f4i l\u00e0ng nh\u1ecf ven bi\u00ean gi\u1edbi Vi\u1ec7t Nam – Campuchia, m\u1ed9t \u0111\u1ee9a tr\u1ebb s\u01a1 sinh suy dinh d\u01b0\u1ee1ng \u0111\u00e3 m\u1ea5t c\u1ea3 cha l\u1eabn m\u1eb9 ch\u1ec9 24 ng\u00e0y sau khi ch\u00e0o \u0111\u1eddi. More than three decades ago, in a small village near the Vietnam-Cambodia border, a malnourished newborn lost both parents just 24 days after birth. The impoverished neighbors, with nothing but their compassion, fed the infant saltwater – a desperate attempt to keep him alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I only learned this story years later, from my foster mother. Her voice carried both sorrow and gratitude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They had nothing to give you – nothing but saltwater. And that was how you survived.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saltwater, by its nature, is a paradox. It can serve as a temporary solution to sustain life when no mother’s milk is available, yet it cannot nourish a child to grow strong. It is a symbol of human kindness, yet also a symbol of scarcity. That image has never left my mind. It mirrors the deep inequality in education, where some children have access to an ocean of knowledge, while others, like me, had only saltwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many underprivileged communities, education is like saltwater: it exists, but it is never enough. Schools stand, teachers teach, yet the depth of learning, the quality of resources, and the opportunities to advance remain painfully thin. The illusion of access can be dangerous. It allows people to believe that simply having schools is sufficient. But education should not just be about keeping students afloat; it should create the pathways that allow them to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was fortunate. I had teachers who refused to let me grow up with just a “saltwater education.” They gave me more than lessons; they gave me belief, resilience, and a vision beyond survival. They made me see that education should not be a bitter sip of endurance, but a fresh, flowing stream that nourishes and empowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That realization pushed me beyond my limits and into responsibility. I couldn\u2019t just receive knowledge, I had to ensure it flowed to those still deprived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2017, I returned to T\u00e2y Ninh, the place where I was born and where my parents took their last breaths. A land of hardship, but also of memory. There, I became a teacher with Teach For Vietnam. It was in the classroom that I realized the challenges of education cannot be solved by individual dedication alone. My students were not just rural children; many were orphans, left to navigate life on their own. At 18, they aged out of the welfare system, leaving them without a safety net. Many fell into uncertainty. That realization pushed me to think bigger, beyond education alone. I needed to create sustainable pathways for orphaned youth, ensuring they could continue learning, build careers, and fully integrate into society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This understanding led me to expand my role, from shaping individual lives as a teacher to transforming systems as a changemaker. I founded Your-E, a social enterprise dedicated to making high-quality education equitable and accessible, particularly for orphans, rural students, and disadvantaged youth. Today, our programs have reached students across 48 provinces in Vietnam and four other countries, a growing movement toward educational equity. Through teacher empowerment, integrating technological innovation, and student-centered learning, Your-E is building an educational ecosystem where every child has the chance to grow and succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have never forgotten what it means to be the child who survived on saltwater. The taste of scarcity never truly fades. When I see students struggling to stay in school, I see echoes of myself, the same quiet resilience, the same fight against forces beyond their control. In every child who is given only the bare minimum to survive, I recognize the fragile line between endurance and opportunity. This is why the future I envision is not one where education merely exists as a lifeline. It is one where education nourishes, uplifts, and empowers. It is not enough to keep students afloat; we must give them the current to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education, like access to clean water, is a fundamental right – not a privilege reserved for the few. Paulo Freire\u2019s concept of ‘education as liberation’ resonates deeply with my work, as I have seen firsthand how knowledge is not just survival but empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To realize that vision, I believe in three fundamental pillars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Empowering Teachers: Teachers are not just knowledge providers; they are mentors, role models, and catalysts for change. At Your-E, we have implemented mentorship programs where experienced educators guide younger teachers, fostering a network of learning and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Building Inclusive Classrooms: A classroom should not be a place where students merely absorb information; it must be a space where they are seen, heard, and developed as whole individuals. I have worked with education leaders to design community-based classrooms where curricula do not just address academic needs but also amplify the voices of students themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Shaping Policy: Sustainable change cannot happen without collaboration between policymakers, school leaders, and global education organizations. I have collaborated with policymakers to establish mentorship programs for orphaned youth, ensuring continued support beyond age 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
